CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Our idea behind "alternative fitness" is two-fold:
1) We offer a lot of alternatives and
2) We don't have traditional gym equipment or health club offerings...
We're a little different and a lot of fun. Here's an overview:

BOX OF CHOCOLATESTM--NEW! AVAILABLE ONLY AT EID:
Science has taught us that both our bodies and our minds love variety. The ultimate in fitness alternatives is presented by Faith at Exercise In Disguise as a new class affectionately called "Box of Chocolates" precisely because...well, you never know what you're gonna get. You might say it's a little bit P90Xish, but sweeter--you'll have a live, qualified instructor, and other class members to commiserate with.

Box of ChocolatesTM classes will challenge your body to reach deeper and extend further as you move through the variety of fitness modes offered during each hour, and will keep your brain entertained to make the hard work go by fast. Every type of exercise we specialize in at EID might be included as an interval in your BoC class, including traditional calestenics, bodyweight training, Pilates matwork, boot camp drills, sprint aerobics, yoga asanas, high intensity intervals, small accessories for resistance, balance and flexibility work, Zumba, plyometrics...even jazz leaps across the floor are not ruled out. No matter what class times you attend, the work will never repeat two classes in a row. BoC classes are for healthy, able-bodied people ages 13 years old and up. All fitness levels are welcome; modifications are offered for new students with less experience, and advanced exercises are also demonstrated.

BoC classes are offered four times a week. Check the schedule, here. Reserve your classes in advance, up to 2 hours before class time, as available. View available spots in classes by looking at the class calendar, here. To reserve a class time and date, do so in person at the studio; or email Faith here with your name, phone # & class request(s); or call 847-845-0297 to leave a voicemail. Limit of 15 people in a class. Sign-ups are first-come, first-served.

BoC classes are sold on punchcards, which expire 5/31/2011*. :
  • 1 - 11 punches $14 per
  • 12 - 24 punches $13 per
  • 25 punches and up, $12 per
  • Taking other classes at EID, too? Your BoC punches will always be $12.

Punch cards may only be used by one person and are not transferable. Use them to come to any BoC class time during the week: your schedule and frequency are up to you. There are no refunds or make-ups for missed classes: if you reserve it, your card will be marked. You can show up at the last minute to see if there's a spot available, but you'll take your chances if class if full, or cancelled due to lack of sign-ups.

INTRODUCTION TO PILATES: (one time class required for new students*)
Pilates is a specialized conditioning method, aiming to make several key principals understood by the bodies and minds of its students. To promote class safety, effectiveness and personalized modifications, a 1-hour Introduction to Pilates class is required of all new students. These classes are offered at regular intervals on our schedule. Attendees will learn what they need to know to confidently enter a Pilates class at the appropriate experience level.

PILATES MATWORK: Conditioning that uses your own body as resistance, done on a floor mat. No impact. Specific exercises strengthen, stretch and sculpt. Mind-body work that requires focus, control, breath, and visualization. Lots of abdominal and back work. Gentle for beginners, but most won't call it easy.

PILATES EQUIPMENT: Same principals and approach as above, but using unique equipment that offers variable resistance with springs, pulleys, cords, pedals, arcs and more. Vast variety of exercises are highly customizable, from therapeutic to elite athletic levels. Classes are semi-private (four person max).

OTHER FLOORWORK: Variety does a body good; our schedule gives options. Yogilates is a Pilates-based mat class with added yoga poses for balance and stretch. Toys is Pilates matwork with small accessories like foam rollers and Power Rings. Balls & Bands is an offshoot of Toys, using big stability balls and stretchy Therabands. You might try a Fitness Fusion class (below), Power Pilates for the brave and strong, or  Matwork with Toning Balls which incorporates small heavy hand-helds that rock your upper body and core. Try something new any session!

HIIT/HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (Guts & Butts): This class features short intervals of intensity of pace and movement, ranging from traditional Pilates moves on the mat, to hard core conditioning for glutes and abs, to a sprint aerobics pace standing and moving across the floor. Not for the faint of heart, this is a tough class that causes a lot of heavy breathing and perspiration. Interval training has become the gold standard of fat-burning exercise, and will help make you stronger, build endurance and increase your heart health as well.

FITNESS FUSION/AB & BOOTY FUSION Full-body workout incorporating intervals of cardio, Pilates, yoga, tai chi, balance and flexibility work and traditional conditioning exercises. It's a constant stream of new challenges and changes that will help your muscles and movements. Not to mention, it's fun, funky, and suitable for everyone. The Ab & Booty version features a bit more for the abs. And booty.

AB & BOOTY CAMP: Pick a couple classes a week, get yourself assessed, and join us for focused conditioning and cardio, with a special emphasis on your abdominals and glutes. Camp sessions will rotate in and out of various sessions. Check out the results from our most recent 9-Week Winter Fitness camp here:

YOGA: We currently have no yoga classes in session. Please consider our popular Yoga/Pilates blend, called Yogilates. Yoga practice at our studio offers a centering, healthful approach, as well as a chance to enhance your overall fitness level. Yoga students enjoy increased range of motion, strength, balance and a fabulous feeling of focus and calm.

ZUMBA: Cardiovascular interval training; Latino cousin of aerobic dance. Simple-to-learn salsa dance steps combined with conditioning and incredibly fun music. You won't believe you danced away an hour and 400 - 600 calories! We also may feature Zumba classes combined with Belly Dancing or Groupies songs.

GROUPIESTM: American cousin of Zumba, Groupies is Faith's own invention. Same cardio-dance/interval-conditioning approach as above, but born in the USA.

PRIVATE TRAINING: Private training is a good choice for those with distinct exercise limitations or vigorous goals, pre-natal or post-rehab clients, and others with specific needs. Single class or ongoing coaching, scheduled on request.

NON-DIET WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: An aspect of our private training and workshop schedule that we are growing into small group classes. Read more...
